Human
Resources Team Rolls Out Evaluation Program Using Video & Web

(Sept. 2003) Foster
City,
CA --
The HR organization for Applied Biosystems, a leading pharmaceutical and
biotechnology company, unveiled a new employee self-evaluation
program earlier this week. The program is designed for employees to rate their
own performance, set short and long term goals, and to boost overall
productivity. The HR group was challenged however by the logistics of multiple
campus locations and cities in which Applied Biosystems employees work.
To quickly and cost-effectively roll out the program company wide, AB
partnered with Creative Video Services, a Bay Area multimedia company, to
solve the distance issue. CVS suggested the use of Video on Demand (VoD)
technology, which would utilize the internet and bring the new HR program
right to the desktop of every employee. This would immediately solve the
distance problem facing AB. CVS would simply capture the training on video
tape, along with any supporting literature, and package the training just as
if viewers were seeing it live.
Applied Biosystems executives loved the concept, and cost, but presented
another major obstacle - their network infrastructure would not support the
bandwidth needs of a Video on Demand program. The expense involved in bringing
their IT staff's tools and knowledge base up to speed also made the VoD
program cost prohibitive. The team at Creative Video Services again suggested
a solution that would quickly, and inexpensively, address both issues. CVS
could set up a video server network that would be externally managed, serviced
and secured. The result would be an instant, viable network for Applied
Biosystems with almost zero cost of ownership.
A complete, end-to-end package presented by CVS made it an easy decision for
executives, and ultimately a very successful roll-out of an important Human
Resources program. The result is over a 90% adoption rate for the new program,
greater productivity for employees and significant cost savings for Applied
Biosystems. A nice by-product also gained is a new VoD network that the
company can utilize for future training.
